Beirut Arab University- Faculty of Arts & Design

THE PROJECT

Established in 1960, Beirut Arab University is a non-profit private higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large city of Beirut. This institution has also branch campuses in the following location(s): Debbieh, Tripoli, and Bekaa. Beirut Arab University (BAU) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, and doctorate degrees in several areas of study.

The Beirut Arab University Debbieh Campus was established in 2006 and is located 33 km from Beirut city. The land spans over an area of 1,353,000 m2, and the total built area is 52,538 m2. It comprises four buildings for the faculties and the administration, two buildings for student dorms, two buildings for staff dorms, a gymnasium, a mosque, an astronomical observatory an open theater, and a student lounge.

Upon completion the new 14,000.00 square meters building will include:

• 2 Computer Labs
• 3 Auditorium (112 persons)
• 1 Auditorium (132 persons)
• 200 square meters Library

THE CHALLENGE

Climacond was engaged in October 2016 to act as primary supplier for the HVAC equipment for the 14,000.00 m2 Building. Climacond teamed with Systemair for providing the complete HVAC solution from chillers to air outlets for the entire facility.

A CLOSER LOOK

COOLING PLANT

The Chilled Water Cooling Plant is composed of Four Systemair heat pump Syscroll Chillers Model SYSCROLL HP EVO 620 producing approximately 2,335 kW of cooling. The chilled water is distributed to the building through a variable primary flow pumping arrangement.

Each chiller is equipped with a sound proof acoustic box for the compressors and 6 poles (low RPM) condenser fans. Moreover, each refrigerant circuit is equipped with an electronic expansion valve to improve the superheat regulation of the refrigerant circuits.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY

No issue is more important in the design of a higher education building than students comfort. Comfort involves more than air temperature; it also involves drafts, noise and humidity. This why Climacond chose the Eurovent Certified Performance Air Handling Units from Systemair HSK Turkey in order to ensure a high performance air system (HPAS).

Key features considered during the selection of the AHUs were:
• Low leakage / low pressure economizer / outside air damper
• F7 Filters
• G4 Pre-Filters
• Optimally sized coils
• Low-leakage / low pressure recirculation dampers
• High efficiency fan with variable speed drives.

SMOKE MANAGEMENT

For the large-volume atrium, smoke management systems was an important aspect of fire protection, with the primary goal being able to ensure that the impact of smoke and heat on the occupants is not life-threatening.

This involved keeping the height of the smoke layer above the highest level of occupancy for a defined period, longer than the expected time to evacuate the building. Systemair range of smoke extract fans was able to accommodate for the above mentioned requirements.

AIR DISTRIBUTION

For the air distribution in the large design studios Systemair Swirl Diffusers were used in order to provide a uniform distribution of air and an ideal indoor climate. Moreover, Systemair constant flow air dampers were used throughout the project in order to guarantee a perfect distribution of air flow without any need for balancing of the ventilation and air distribution system.
